(Hagatna, Guahan November 19, 2009)  As a result of the September 30th tsunami that ravaged Samoa, Guam has raised a total of $16,250.00 on relief efforts

On Thursday, November 19, 2009 a presentation was held at the Governor's chambers on behalf of the people of Guam to the American Samoa Disaster Relief and Recovery Program.  "We couldn't have done it without the help of the people of Guam," First Lady Joann Camacho who spearheaded along with several organizations that include the Guam Fire Department, Guam Police Department, Civil Defense, Guam Homeland Security and the National Guard, two boot drives which raised over $10,000, held at the major intersections along Marine Corps Drive.

In addition, Artists for Artists, a coalition of local artists along with the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities hosted an art auction. To further the effort, donations were received at the  "Cultural Dimensions" art show at the Infiniti Art Gallery and at the Guam Micronesian Island Fair. Because of the friendships made at the Festival of the Arts in American Samoa in 2008, the performing arts delegation comprised of members of Pa'a Taotao Tano designated a portion of the funds raised at the recently held 25th Anniversary presentation of "Guahu Taotao Tano". Local community leader Simon Sanchez contributed, along with the Guam Chapter of Government Accountants.

American Samoa Governor Togiola TA Tulafono participated in a "call-in" during the presentation along with Lt. Col Evelyn Langford, Governor's representative in the Relief Efforts and Ms. Easter Bruce, Manager of the Donations Management Program for the American Samoa Disaster Relief and Recovery Program

Governor Felix Camacho said "It is important that we do what we can to aid our pacific brothers and sisters during their time in need.  And it is evident with the fund raising efforts that we will live up to our pledge of support to help Samoa recover from this devastation."

Fundraising efforts are still ongoing.  Plans include a benefit concert scheduled for early December to further aid the people of the Samoas and Tonga.  In addition, portions of the Chamorro Village sweepstakes will be earmarked for the relief efforts.
